Study in E Minor
Francisco Tárrega
The most difficult parts of this piece are the barred 2nd positions (II) and a half barré 5th position (1/2 V) as marked in the score. Otherwise, there's not much else in this piece that will pose any problems. The triplet rhythm is constant throughout and the final chord is played as natural harmonics on fret 12 of the first three strings. Emphasise the melody notes, which are the first notes of every triplet group.
The composer of this piece, Francisco Tarrega (1852 -1909), was born in the Spanish province of Castellón. He became a virtuoso guitarist, composer and guitar teacher in his twenties. Modern classical guitar technique dates from his modifications to the standard R-H hand position in use at the time.
